OFFENSE
The slight edge here goes to Green Bay based on two things; its overall production and its quarterback. The Packers finished the regular season with the ninth-ranked offense in the league while the Steelers finished ranked 14th. Green Bay’s passing game averaged 258 passing yards a game verse Pittsburgh’s 225 yards. In the postseason these numbers came in at 251 for the Packers and 156 for the Steelers.

Green Bay’s rushing game only averaged 100 yards a game in the regular season, but ballooned to 118 yards a game with the emergence of rookie RB James Starks as a legitimate weapon. Pittsburgh has remained consistent throughout, averaging close to 120 yards in both the regular season and the playoffs.

DEFENSE
The slight edge here goes to Pittsburgh based on total yards allowed and its secondary. The Steelers finished the regular season giving up an average of 277 total yards per game. This number was reduced to an average of 208 in their two playoff games. The Packers gave up an average of 309 total yards per game in the regular season and cut it back to 282 yards in their three playoff games.

Both defenses have been rock-solid against the run in the postseason, but Pittsburgh held its opponents to an average of 155 passing yards per game, while Green Bay came in at 213.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Both these teams have decent special teams, but in a close game like this you have to look at each team’s placekicker to find an edge. Pittsburgh kicker Shaun Suisham was not a huge part of the offense this season, but he did convert on 14-of-15 attempts including going 8-for-9 from 40 or more yards out. The Packers’ Mason Crosby was called on 28 times in the regular season, converting on 22 of his kicks. Four of his misses were from 40 yards or longer, but he did miss twice from 39 yards in, giving Pittsburgh a moderate advantage in this category.

INTANGIBLES
Since most big games are won or lost on which team wins the battle of turnovers, this category is probably the biggest intangible there is. Green Bay finished the regular season with a turnover ratio of +10 and was +3 in the playoffs. Pittsburgh finished the regular season ranked second to only New England at +17, but was even in its two playoff games. The slight advantage here goes to the Steelers for their overall body of work.

Another important intangible in big games is experience. Green Bay is returning to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1998, while Pittsburgh’s roster is littered with players from their 2008 Super Bowl run and has a quarterback named Ben Roethlisberger who is going for his third ring in seven seasons in the NFL. A big advantage here goes to Pittsburgh.

THE FINAL ANALYSIS
When you add it all up the scales tip towards Pittsburgh in this game especially given the fact it is getting 2 ½-points. The 2010 Steelers will never go down as one of the prettiest teams in the NFL, but they have a knack for making plays at the right time and have also been able to “snatch victory from the jaws of defeat” on more than one occasion in the past. Stick with Pittsburgh to add to its franchise glory with yet another Lombardi Trophy.

Green Bay Packers
(13-6, 12-7 ATS)

Pittsburgh Steelers
(14-4, 12-6 ATS)

This year’s Super Bowl will feature two of the NFL’s most successful franchises of all time in the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers. Both the Steelers and Packers have not only won a significant amount of regular season and playoff games, but they’ve been to the pinnacle as well and have a history of winning the Super Bowl.

The Steelers are making their eighth trip to the Super Bowl and have won six – the most titles in the game’s history. The Packers, on the other hand, will be appearing in the franchise’s fifth Super Bowl and have won three. And if you count Green Bay’s nine previous NFL Championships before the game was officially called the Super Bowl, this game will pit the league’s two most dominant franchises in history against each other.

AFC Conference Championship Analysis

Both teams reached this game after winning close AFC and NFC championship games. The Steelers raced to a 24-0 first-half lead against the New York Jets, thanks in part to short touchdown runs by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and running back Rashard Mendenhall, and appeared to have the game well in hand. The Jets didn’t give up, however, and a long pass play from quarterback Mark Sanchez to former Steeler Santonio Holmes brought the Jets to within two touchdowns. A safety and another Sanchez touchdown pass later, this time to receiver Jericho Cotchery, brought New York to within five points and thinking upset. But that’s as close as they’d come as the Steelers connected on two first-down plays late in the fourth quarter to run out the clock and win the game.

NFC Conference Championship Analysis

The NFC game between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears was a similar story. The Packers held a 14-0 lead late in the third quarter when the Chicago Bears made their comeback. With starting quarterback Jay Cutler banged up and backup Todd Collins ineffective, the Bears turned to little-used third-string quarterback Caleb Hanie. Hanie led an eight-play drive and marched the team down the field to the Packers 1-yard where backup running back Chester Taylor gave the Bears their first points with a rushing touchdown. After giving up a defensive touchdown on a pick-six by the Packers B.J. Raji, Hanie threw a touchdown pass to Earl Bennett to make the score 21-14. The Bears had one more shot to tie the game, marching down to the Green Bay 29-yard line, but Hanie threw his second interception of the game and the Packers came away victorious.

What to Expect from the Super Bowl

Looking ahead to the Super Bowl matchup, this has all the makings for a good game. Both quarterbacks have played some of the best football of their careers this season. Aaron Rodgers has been a legitimate Most Valuable Player candidate in passing for nearly 4,000 yards and 28 touchdowns without the benefit of a very good running game. And after a four-game suspension, Ben Roethlisberger has bounced back, throwing for more than 3,000 yards, 17 touchdowns, and only five interceptions in a short season.

The Steelers have a better running game with 1,200 yard rusher, Rashard Mendenhall while the Packers offense is a bit more lethal in the passing game. Pittsburgh may have the edge in defense and also experience, as several players on the team participated in the franchise’s two most recent Super Bowl wins. The key to the game may rely on the Packers’ ability to establish a ground game – something that is extremely difficult to do against the Steelers, one of the league’s toughest defenses against the run.

Either way, fans are in for a special game featuring the two most successful franchises in league history.

Who are you rooting for?

The Pittsburgh Steelers already have 6 Super Bowl Championships, the most recent coming from 2008. Ben Roethlisberger was a part of their 2 most recent wins and at just 28 years of age, his Super Bowl resume is already sparkling. At 6'5" he's able to throw over the offensive line with ease and his lumbering momentum is useful for short yardage situations.
But we recommended the Packers in the early portion of the 2010/11 NFL season and we aren't going to back down now that they have made the big game. However it's fair to say that a close contest should be expected and the spread of -2.5 in Green Bay's favor certainly implies a well contested championship (bet365).
Super Bowl XLV takes place on Sunday February 6th, 2011 from Cowboy's Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The national anthem will be sung by Christina Aguilera and the half-time show will feature the Black Eyed Peas.
FOX have the television coverage and kickoff time is at about 5:25pm Central Time (6:25pm ET).
Besides Aguilera and the Black Eyed Peas another interesting sideshow at the Super Bowl will be the advertisements. This year a 30 second commercial could cost about $3,000,000 - a staggering figure - and one that is derived from the fact that the Super Bowl is the pinnacle hour in American sports.

Dallas Cowboys Stadium awaits this year's Super Bowl champions.

Quarterbacks

Aaron Rodgers has been superb in this year’s postseason, completing 66 of 93 passes for 790 yards with six touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 109.2 on his way to his first Super Bowl. If he and Green Bay’s receivers continue to connect and execute against Pittsburgh’s passing defense, the Packers’ Super Bowl appearance should be bright.

Ben Roethlisberger has already won two Super Bowl rings in his stellar NFL career. The future Hall of Famer has completed 29 of 51 passes for 359 yards with two touchdowns and a 75.5 quarterback rating in two playoff games so far. However, he is facing a youthful and solid Packers secondary that will test Big Ben’s composure and playoff experience.

Running Backs

Green Bay didn’t boast a finely tuned running game early on the season, but the entry of James Starks made their offense more respectable. After a strong performance in the conference championship game against a fearsome Bears rush-defense, Starks is definitely a player to watch.

Rashard Mendenall is clearly one of NFL’s most explosive running backs today. With a strong Pittsburgh offensive line opening lanes through defenses, Mendenhall could have a huge game against the Packers.

Wild Receivers

With wide receivers James Jones, Jordy Nelson, Donald Driver, and Greg Jennings, the Packers have one of the most powerful aerial attacks in the league today. The Steelers will have to contend and keep these four receivers in check.

Mike Wallace has consistently proven his big play this season. And with Heath Miller in the middle and Mendenhall at hand during screen situations, Pittsburgh also has sufficient talents to counter Green Bay.

Defense

Pittsburgh has solidified its defensive dominance in the NFL. In the regular season, they have just allowed 62.8 yards per game to rival running backs, and have sacked rival quarterbacks 48 times.

All season long, Green Bay has relied on their 3-4 defensive schemes. With B.J Raji, Tramon Williams, Charles Woodson, and Clay Matthews running after Pittsburgh’s star quarterback, the Steelers could be in for a rough day.

Special Teams

The Packers’ coverage teams have been a let down this season for Green Bay. However, they were able to hold down Bears’ Devin Hester in a game that mattered most.

Emmanuel Sanders has averaged 25.1 yards per kick return for the Steelers. His abilities will play an important role for Piitsburgh.

Final Thoughts

After going through the Green Bay Packers vs Pittsburgh Steelers preview, football fans are definitely expecting a thrilling Super Bowl XLV. Green Bay and Pittsburgh both have erratic yet efficient offenses, and their pace on defense is equally impressive. One question hangs in the air though: Is Green Bay’s diverse offense too much for Pittsburgh’s defense to handle? Stayed tuned in the coming days for our predictions as we count down the days till Super Bowl XLV.
